Small Businesses: Office 365 or Google Apps?

As more and more small business look for ways to make their workforce increasing mobile, the competition  Microsoft 365 and Google Apps increases. First, Google ended the free version of Google Apps for businesses with 10 or fewer users. Microsoft took advantage of this opportunity and, one week later, announced that they tripled the length of Office 365 Small Business free trial from 30 to 90 days.

Google Apps features

Some features that small businesses can benefit from Google apps are:
  • Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides
  • The inbox has 25 GB of storage
  • Can be used on private domain names
  • For extra fees more features can be added, such as 24-hour phone support, archiving service, or additional storage

Microsoft Office 365 features

Small businesses represent over 90 percent of Office 365 customers today. Some features that small businesses can benefit from are:

  • Cloud based email, shared calendars and Web-based Office apps
  • 25 GB inbox storage plus the ability to send and receive 25 MB attachments
  • It integrates with the desktop version of the software (Microsoft Office)
  • Access to Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync for an extra charge
Small businesses are increasingly moving to cloud apps in part due to the financial benefits of using cloud technologies. If you decided to move to the cloud you should take into consideration the features and benefits of both solutions, analyze how each of them can improve and streamline your daily activity and go for the one that suits your needs best. Migrating to the cloud is a big decision for businesses of all sizes, and this decision shouldn’t be made prior to an extended evaluation of your IT systems in order to optimize the value on business processes and user adoption. There is no one right approach. You have to balance both options with your business needs and the overall deployment strategy.
